Song Interpretation(spring 2006)

Objective:
Choose a song without any lyrics that has some true character or emotion

Concept:
Breakdown the song into various parts and decide where you may hear datums, hierarchies; role players

Subject:
The artist i came down to was Moby. His music is typically labeled “electronica”, and has a wide selection of songs without lyrics. I was inspired by a scene in the movie “Heat” when the two main characters met at a very pivotal point. The song that played in the background was “gods hand passing over the waters” by Moby.

My process quickly began with the recognition of the various instruments playing in the song. Focus was emphasized on repetition as well as timing. As can be seen in the diagrams, fluid-like images kept appearing to me during the song. The song had a sort of momentum if you will. The sounds started gradually, slowly climaxing until all you could hear was a beautiful symphony that could easily be said was created by the "hand of god".

The lasting impression this song gave me was one of flying. A vision of something starting from its birth and gradually growing into something more beautiful, more powerful than one could ever imagine. The song was carefully crafted to evolve into a work of art, I too, saw my building as a work of art. Elements were taken and manipulated so that they may work together. In the end i wanted to create a building that resembled a sculpture, that i too may leave an impression similar to that which i experienced while listening to gods hand passing over the waters.
